The Deep Space Travel Network is a small group of No Man's Sky players. No Man's Sky is a sci-fi video game simulating trillions upon trillions of fully-explorable planets and moons. As one of these players, I undertook branding the group as an opportunity to experiment with website design and typography.
The logo is designed to look as if it could exist within the game's universe. To achieve this, I developed custom characters based on in-game letters and designs. I then expanded these characters into an entire custom font that I could use in both the website and other branded materials.
The website was also designed to look as if it was being viewed on a device in the game. The custom font was used for subtitles in order to make it feel more alien. These subtitles do not need to be understood in order to navigate the site. Additionally, a CRT scan line effect was overlaid to help convince users they were indeed using vintage sci-fi technology.
Postcards were designed to represent actual locations in the game's universe. Actual game screenshots were combined with the DSTN Regular typeface to create these vintage-inspired postcards.
Animated introductions and title screens give DSTN video content a distinct retro flair and help maintain the illusion of an in-universe entity. Much like the website, the video's content type determines the accent color; red for resources, green for exploration, and blue for news and meta content.
